What is a citation

28th May 2019 By Mark Hickman

What is a citation in relation to SEO?  Good question.  Here’s the definition according to Moz.com

Citation

A mention of a business name in close proximity to its address, phone number, or both. Used by the search engines to weigh both the accuracy and popularity of businesses in their indexes

Build a few high-quality citations.  These citations are historically reserved specifically for local-focused websites, but they do an awesome job of adding a bit more trust and authority to your site.  Here’s a short list of sites you could use to build your citations:

Issuu
Hotfrog
Citysquares
Foursquare
Brownbook
ShowMeLocal
SaleSpider
Manta

Don’t expect listing on these sites to bring in any direct traffic boosts, but they will protect your site from future penalties, and add more legitimacy and trust to your website.
